Stability the Key for Bashir
Nas Bashir

The United boss wants to build a squad capable of taking the club back into the non-League top tier following relegation last month.

Bashir had to rely on inexperienced youth players and loan signings as his side scrapped to beat the drop, with player of the year Steve Arnold borrowed from Wycombe and big number nine Phil Walsh came in from Dagenham & Redbridge.

United have already been dealt a blow with skipper Jamie Hand’s decision to leave the club and Bashir is now scouting for players to mount a promotion challenge next season.

“It’s key we keep the key players here for next season,” he said. “In the summer I’m looking to find the perfect balance of youth and experience.

“I can’t just take a young inexperienced squad into the next campaign because we’d get smashed every week. You have to find the right mix of youthful enthusiasm and experience to have any chance of success.

“We’ve already talked to the players we want to keep. Obviously dropping down a division is going to deflate a player, especially when they’ve been performing in such a strong league.

“We’re going to have to play a bit of a waiting game.”

Bashir’s future was also subject to speculation, but following a three-hour meeting with the board in which he gave a presentation to explain his vision for the club, the United boss will lead the team next season.

“I’ve only been here one year, and that’s not enough time for me to have a proper impact,” he added. “This year’s not gone exactly to plan but the board backs me and I’m confident about our chances next season.

“The meeting with the board was important. We all needed to pin down some things at the club which are key to us moving forward, one of which was me staying on. We all share the same vision of putting in a proper infrastructure at the club that will bring success in the next few years.

“Moving into the new ground is part of that, as is building a strong, settled squad. The club have given full backing to the things I want to do.”
