Tight at the Top

....Ashington 2-1 at a soggy Brewery Field on Wednesday night.

Marc Walton hit the bar for Ashington before Moors took the lead just before half-time, when Craig Ruddy crossed from the left to the far post, where defender Paul Buzzeo chested the ball past his own keeper into the net.

Ruddy scored the second after 58 minutes when Steve Richardson’s shot was blocked by Ashington keeper Karl Dryden, but he kept his cool to drill the ball home.

Ashington pulled a goal back through a Craig Scott effort 5 minutes from the end.

Moors manager Jason Ainsley said: "I thought the players were outstanding in very difficult conditions, every one of the lads put in a tremendous shift and deserved the victory."

Dunston UTS failed to win for the third successive game when they were held to a 2-2 draw at Consett.

The home side took the lead when Michael Mackay scored after he played a 1-2 with Ryan King, but Dunston equalised when Micky Chilton forced the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble.

With 10 minutes left Mackay made it 2-1 from a Lewis Teesdale pass, but after 87 minutes Dunston sub Lee McAndrew cut in from the left and fired the equaliser.

Dunston manager Billy Irwin said: "They were the worst conditions I've seen for a long time. Credit to both teams for playing the game."

Consett manager Kenny Lindoe said; "We played well with a depleted squad and should have held out for a win."

The Second Division game between Easington Colliery and Esh Winning was postponed because of floodlight problems.
