Vaughan Sends Himself Off!

....unusual step of banishing himself from the dugout in protest at Richard Jackson’s controversial sending off.

Former Hammers defender Jackson received a straight red card for a foul on Ryan Murray, a decision described by Vaughan as “mindless”.

However, rather than run the risk of following Jackson into the referee`s bad books, Vaughan vacated his technical area and watched the rest of the game from behind the railings.

Vaughan, whose side won 2-1, told the Bournemouth Echo: “We all make mistakes but it was a terrible decision. The referee said it was a two-footed tackle but Richard had both feet on the ground. He slid in and kicked the ball almost out of the ground before the referee decided to send him off. “I was fuming. The referee came over to talk to me and told me he would send me off as well if I didn’t calm down. I told him I didn’t want to talk to him. I told him he wouldn’t have to send me off because I was going to send myself off and jumped over the barrier.”

Fawzi Saadi’s penalty and a goal from Connor Phillips saw Poppies race into an early 2-0 lead before Dan Manuel halved the arrears just seconds after Jackson had been sent packing.

Asked for his view on the Jackson dismissal, Hammers boss Simon Browne said: “I thought it was harsh. I thought Jacko basically paid the price for the referee not sending-off Sam Lockyer earlier in the game.

“I spoke to Sam after the game and he said he felt he was lucky to stay on. He kicked out at Dave Sturgess when they tangled for a ball. I know Sam is not a nasty lad but he lost it.

“The referee probably had it on his mind that he had made a mistake and was probably a little too eager to show the red card to Jacko. If he looked at the two incidents again, I think he would probably reverse those decisions.”
