He takes over from Colin Merrick, who was sacked by the club's management committee following Wellington's 4-0 home defeat by Devizes Town last weekend.
Merrick had been in charge for eighteen months, during which Wellington struggled in the Premier Division and were relegated in the 2010-11 season. Ward, 52, who managed Taunton Town's successful under-18 side last season, played non-League football for Yeovil, Gravesend & Northfleet, Folkestone, Trowbridge Town, Clevedon Town and Taunton Town. He was also a member of the English semi-professional squad.
This is his first senior appointment and he said: "There is an awful lot of work to be done, most of which will be on the training ground.
"I haven't promised the club anything. First we have to stabilise things and work from there." Meanwhile, Paul Short has been appointed assistant-manager.
Short, who held a similar position at Taunton until Paul West was sacked in the summer, takes over from Kevin Hazeldine and will be at Wellington's FA Vase tie at Barnstaple tomorrow (Sat). Wellington have also signed Andy Butler, who captained Evo-Stick League Southern Division One South & West club Taunton for a spell last season.
