Watson Wants a Player a Week
Liam Watson

....Premier club Southport is far from complete as the Sandgrounders boss revealed he wants to bring in one player a week until the season kicks off.

Watson has already brought in Steve Akrigg from Skelmersdale United, Simon Grande from Fleetwood Town and James Smith from Altrincham to bolster his defence and the Yellow’s boss believes another defender could well be on the way to the club by the end of the week.

After watching his side securing their Conference Premier status thanks only to a reprieve born out of Rushden & Diamond’s financial collapse, Watson was intent on freshening his squad from the very start of summer and acquiring players with Conference experience was his ultimate goal.

His next objective is to add a proven central midfielder to his options and with little over four weeks until the start of the new campaign, Haig Avenue imports look set to be arriving thick and fast. “I would have thought there will be another defender by the weekend,” said Watson.

“My intention is to bring in one player a week until the start of the season.

“I’m fine in both wide areas. I need a central midfielder. At least one, possibly two central midfielders and a centre forward. Another proven middle midfielder though, definitely.”

Any incoming midfielders will scrap for their place with regulars Alan Moogan and Aaron Turner as the Sandgrounder’s squad grows with no players having yet exited the club this summer.

“Everyone is still here,” added Watson. “There’s been one inquiry on Tony Gray but that’s all it was really, an inquiry.”

Watson literally put his troops through their paces in a gruelling track workout last week to build stamina ahead of the club’s first friendly of the summer against Rochdale on Saturday and the boss is pleased with how the summer workload is being digested by his players.

“Pre-season has gone fine, everyone has worked hard,” added the former Burscough manager. “A few trialists found it hard and disappeared.

“We want to improve and kick the club forward in a good way and just see where the season takes us.”
