Plans by league officials to remove the name 'Wessex' from the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) have now been abandoned.

A proposal at the league's recent AGM to rename it The Sydenhams League in recognition of its sponsors, was narrowly accepted by member clubs.

However, the league's management committee have confirmed it will remain unchanged, at least for the 2012/13 season.

"We have regrettably found that we could not get everything done that was necessary in respect of this to bring it into being for the coming season," said a league spokesman. "So the league will remain as at present."

The spokesman added: "We will consider the position again next season but in the meantime we would ask that Sydenhams be given mention wherever possible."

The Wessex League celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011.
