Heavy rain put paid to a number of pre-season friendlies on Wednesday night. However, several did go ahead, many seeing teams playing their final matches before the 2017/18 season starts in earnest.

Shaw Lane`s former Evo-Stik South rivals Sheffield FC were beaten 3-2 at Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division Staveley Miners Welfare.

The hosts led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Jake Vernon and Kurtis Morley.

Mohammed Tijani reduced the deficit shortly after the break only for Joe Bayne to restore Welfare`s two-goal advantage that Matt Morton cut 14 minutes from time.

Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division side Wombwell Main shocked Staveley`s league rivals Penistone Church by winning 1-0, thanks to a 75th minute Ryan Hallsworth spot-kick.

Another NCEL Premier Division loser were Hall Road Rangers, beaten 4-1 at last season`s champions and now Evo-Stik South outfit, Cleethorpes Town.

Liam Davis bagged a brace for Clee, with Alex Flett and a Daniel North penalty completing the scoring.

Ebac Northern League First Division side Washington warmed-up for Saturday`s Emirates FA Cup tie by beating Second Division Heaton Stannington 3-0.
