Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North club Ossett Town have announced the major signing of former….

….York City, Harrogate Town and Guiseley AFC defender Dave Merris.

Merris has joined Town as a player-coach.

Merris and manager John Reed have been re-united after the former was managed by Reed at the start of his playing career at Harrogate Town.

Last year Merris turned out more than forty times for Conference North side Harrogate, finding himself fourth on the all-time appearance list at a club where he is a favourite with the fans.

The left-sided player has Football League experience at York City where he turned out 116 times, winning many monthly awards and in 2005 was clubman of the year.

He has also had ten years` experience in the Conference North for Harrogate and Guiseley.

On joining the club, Merris said: “This is a great opportunity for me. It’s a new challenge, one that I am very much looking forward to. It is my first coaching job too, I can’t think of anyone better to learn from than John Reed and Clive Freeman, it will be a fantastic experience for myself.

“I’ve been looking at the club’s results from last season when they finished eighth. I believe with the players John is looking to bring in, along with the core of the side already here there is no reason why we cannot be pushing for a spot in the play-offs. We know it will be a tough ask, there are some good clubs in this league.”

Reed cannot speak highly enough of his new signing, saying: “He is up there with one of the best signings I have made in the last ten years. He’s good enough to still be playing in the Conference – he will be a huge player in the NPL.

“Mez is a fantastic player, and I have no doubt he has the skills to be an even better coach. All pre-match preparation will be the responsibility of Clive and Mez, I will be watching everything that goes on as I look to add to what I have from last season.”

Reed, Freeman and Merris have already begun planning for pre-season which will begin on July 1st.
