Defender Matthew Whatley, who captained the Swansea City youth team to their Welsh Cup victory last season, has…..
…been snapped-up by Principality Welsh Premier club Neath Athletic.
After being released from Swansea, 18-year-old Whatley had attracted interest from Cardiff City and, after impressing in training, he featured in an under-21 match at Exeter last April for the Bluebirds and produced a solid performance.
Whatley was called up for Wales in the Tri-Nations in Dublin and has represented Welsh Schools under-18’s against New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland & England.
During his scholarship with Swansea City, he played fifteen games for Swansea reserves while still under 16 and his move to Neath will see him reunited with his former team-mates, Lee Trundle and Matty Collins.
“I’m just really happy to have signed for Neath,” Whatley says. “There’s a lot of exciting developments going on at the club and the training facilities and work ethos are excellent.
“I can’t wait to get the season underway.”
The defender is likely to feature in Terry Boyle’s team that takes on Merthyr Town at the Gnoll on Friday night.
