Vanarama National League North club Salford City have signed vastly experienced midfielder Richie Wellens after his recent release by League One side Shrewsbury Town.

The 36-year-old joined Shrewsbury in January of this year.

He made a dozen appearances last term as the club retained their League One status.

Wellens started his career with Manchester United, but made only one senior appearance as a substitute in a 3–0 League Cup defeat to Aston Villa in October 1999, before going on to enjoy an illustrious Football League career.

Wellens moved to Blackpool in 2000.

Making over 200 appearances for The Seasiders, Wellens was part of the Blackpool side which won two Football League Trophies in three years.

Moves to Oldham and Doncaster Rovers followed, as Wellens was voted in the PFA League One team of the year two years in a row.

Wellens was then sold to Leicester City for £1 million pounds, where he made nearly 150 appearances and was voted the club`s player of the year in 2011.
After being released by Leicester in 2013, Wellens joined his former club Doncaster, before being released in January 2016.

Shrews` boss Micky Mellon was quick to snap up the experienced midfielder, who joined on an eighteen-month deal.
