Brian Smikle, who has featured in the last two friendlies for Altrincham, has agreed terms with the Skrill North club.

Smikle, 27, started out at West Bromwich Albion, from where he had loan spells with Hereford United in 2005/06.

In the summer of 2006 he joined Kidderminster Harriers and enjoyed five seasons at Aggborough, the ground at which, ironically, he may make his formal debut for Altrincham on Saturday.

After this, he joined Cheltenham Town in 2010, a club he left in summer 2012 for Hereford.

He was released from Edgar Street at the end of last season and, after trials with Tamworth this summer, he has now arrived at the J. Davidson Stadium, where he will become Alty`s fifth external signing of the summer, after Danny Boshell, Mike Williams, Kyle Perry and James Walshaw.

Meanwhile, Liam Irwin made an impressive, if brief, debut for Altrincham against a Burnley XI on Saturday.

Midway through his 7-minute cameo his well-taken corner laid on the winner for the Robins.

Born in Altrincham, Liam is the son of former Oldham Athletic and Manchester United defender, Denis Irwin.

He was with Bolton Wanderers and had trials with Oldham and has played for the Republic of Ireland`s under-19 side.
