Wakefield Merger

This coming season will see Evo-Stik League First Division North club Wakefield merge with West Riding County….

….Amateur Leaguers Wakefield City FC.

The arrangement was agreed a couple of weeks ago between the management teams. For Wakefield City the merger should help protect their future, which was somewhat in doubt.

It will allow them to join a sizeable club structure and hopefully give them a larger pool of players to have access to.

For the Bears – subject to agreement of terms with West Yorkshire Sports Club – it will provide a home for the under-18s, Ladies reserves and Wakefield College. It may also provide a home in the future for its ten or so junior teams.

The arrangement also gives exposure to open age football for the younger lads from Wakefield`s Academy, giving them the opportunity to play mens` football and in turn giving City manager Lee Vigars a chance of winning promotion to get somewhere close or into Baris Northern East Counties League football, therefore providing the club with a very good standard in which to breed new talent and offer highly competitive games to play in.

From the start of 2012/13 season it is intended that the entire club will be named ‘Wakefield City FC’, with the current Wakefield City FC playing in the Bears` colours.
