Hewson Gets Busy At Workington

David Hewson, manager of Evo-Stik Northern Premier League club Workington AFC, has spent a productive week talking with the players as he starts to assemble the squad for the 2018/19 campaign.

Hewson has held discussions with the majority of the players and early indications are that most have agreed terms for next season, Reds fifth in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier.

Aaran Taylor, Matty Douglas, Dan Wordsworth, Sam Smith, Josh Calvert, skipper Gari Rowntree, Dav Symington, Conor Tinnion, Jamie Mellen, Phil McLuckie, Sam Joel and Scott Allison have all verbally committed themselves to the club while Rob Wilson, who gave a provisional yes, will continue talks on his return from America.

There was an approach for one of the contracted players recently but, thankfully, he has decided to stay with Reds, a welcome boost for the managers and supporters alike.

Jack Ryan is still awaiting word for an operation nine months after his injury early last season.

One player unlikely to return is goalkeeper Tom Fowler, who will seek a new club to enhance his first-team opportunities.

Fowler, always a more than capable deputy for Aaran Taylor, hasn’t featured in a league game for the past couple of seasons with all his dozen appearances in cup competition.

A possible replacement for Fowler in the squad could be Lewis Casson, who has been associated with Hallmark Security League neighbours Carlisle City.

There are fitness concerns over several members of the squad with operations and scans pending for Allison, McLuckie, Wordsworth and Calvert.

Dave Symington will have his operation in July so will miss the first few months of the campaign.
