With just two days to go before the signing deadline, Evo-Stik League North club Colne FC have pulled off something of a coup by signing Gary Stopforth from Vanarama National League North side Stockport County.
The midfielder, who has enjoyed success throughout the leagues with both Ramsbottom United and Salford City, joins his local club and will go straight into the squad for tonight`s game against Colwyn Bay subject to clearance from the Football Association.
Director of football Danny Bolton told the club`s Pitchero website: “To just have the opportunity of signing a player of Gaz’s calibre shows how far we have come this season. We heard a rumour late Monday that he could be available and from that the whole process snowballed. The manager obviously wanted him in and we worked round the clock to make the deal happen. As soon as Gaz made his intention clear that he wanted to be at Colne FC. The chairman and myself knew it was an absolute no brainer. It must be the easiest negotiations I have ever been involved in. To get it over the line in time for tonights game is a real shot in the arm for the club at this stage of the season.”
Chairman Ryan Haigh added: “Signing Gary is just perfect – perfect for the club and the player as well. I think this is the right time for us to bring him here and he will help us develop as a club also. We also have to thank Jim Gannon and Mark Lockyear for helping us make this happen. Obviously, they didn’t want to lose a player of Gaz’s ability but given the circumstances and the players desire to be more local, Stockport County have been very understanding and helped us through the process with the FA”.
