Burnham are ready to bounce back

It’s not been the best of periods in the history of Burnham Football Club, they will be the first to admit.

It was only three years ago after all that the Gore was hosting a push from promotion in the Southern Premier into the Conference set up.

Now, the club are struggling near the foot of the Hellenic League. They have dropped like a stone but their new manager is sure the club can climb once again.

Mark Betts and his sidekick Jon Palmer have been given the job of keeping Burham in Step 5 and they want to build for the future.

The goal is to be challenging for a return to the Southern League structure next season after the duo replaced Luthur Blissett.

They were given ten games to keep the club in the league and although things are so much better than they were in 2016, they face a fight to keep them up.

But Betts has belief. He said: “We need to get as many points on the board as possible.

“It will be a big challenge keeping the club up but we will be giving it everything we have got.

“We’ll have a real go. This club was playing at Step 3 now so long ago and we can’t suffer a third relegation in as many seasons.”

After beating Henley and Brackley Saints in January, back-to-back defeats to Hydney and then last weekend to Highworth was a set-back.

But considering the club lost its first 17 fixtures this season, things are certainly looking more positive.
