Evo-Stik League South club Market Drayton Town have appointed former Hinckley AFC boss Carl Abbott as their new first-team manager following the recent departure of Martyn Davies.

Abbott’s appointment follows an impressive management career at Wolverhampton Casuals and Midland League Division One outfit Hinckley AFC and is his first at a Step 4 club.

Chairman Ben Cockram said: “We are delighted to welcome Carl Abbott to the club. He is a very impressive individual and has prepared well for the challenge ahead. Carl’s success at Hinckley in both league and cup competitions is something we are certain he will be able to replicate here at Greenfields. He visited us with Hinckley during pre-season in 2016 and we were very impressed with the style of football played by his side as well as their on and off field discipline.

“Carl is very well qualified and he is incredibly professional in his approach to football. He will work closely with the reserve team to ensure talent is brought through the club and he has already identified areas amongst the squad where he wants to add depth so we will see some new faces playing at Greenfields in the near future. We are lucky to already have a squad of very talented young players so the long-term future of the side is looking positive.

“Carl’s appointment is a vital step in our ambition as a club to continue evolving into a more professional and competitive side that can keep pace with an ever-developing league. As we re-shape the club for the future Carl and his management team will work alongside us to develop both as a football team and as a business to ensure sustainability long into the future.”

Abbott’s appointment follows on from a successful career at Hinckley AFC where he guided the team through two giantkilling FA Cup rounds and to the Fifth Round of the FA Vase as well as consecutive top five Midland League finishes having built a team from scratch.

His personable style and excellent ability to find potential in squad members has seen players under his tutorage progress into the Football League.
