Ebbsfleet United’s manager Daryl McMahon was almost lost for words after his club won promotion.
The Fleet were fearing the worst. A man down on the stroke of half time when Anthony Cook was red carded, they were a goal to when Chelmsford City scored ten minutes after.
Bagasan Graham made it 1-0 and manager McMahon must have started to have real concerns.
But he had confidence and his side came together. David Winfield headed in to level and when Darren McQueen put in from close range their wait was over.
McMahon said: “I’m just so happy, what incredible character the players showed out there.
“We needed to find something. We’ve lost playoff finals here before and we didn’t have enough. We knew we had something extra this year.
“I said before this group are mentally stronger and I think what they did showed that to be correct.”
So now it’s promotion, and many will fancy Ebbsfleet with their backing to be up there.
“I need to have a beer first, then we will think about next season!” laughed McMahon, who addressed the crowd at Stonebridge Road to thank them for their support.
“This club will always be looking forward but this weekend is about this weekend.
“We couldn’t be happier. We have been aiming for this for some time and we’ve done it.”
