Steve Watson have been announced as Gateshead’s new manager after he got the nod over Craig Hignett and Alun Armstrong.

The former Newcastle United defender replaces Neil Aspin at the International Stadium.

Blyth boss Armstrong was heavily linked while Hignett has been out of work since leaving Hartlepool.

Watson, assistant to John Askey at Macclesfield Town, has been selected out of 50 applicants.

The number two has never made a secret of his desire to become a manager in his own right and has now been given that chance.

His first game will be on Saturday when the Heed play Buxton in the FA Cup.
