Vanarama National League club Wrexham have announced the appointment of Sam Ricketts as their new manager.
Ricketts has signed a three-year-deal with Wrexham, who have just finished tenth in the table, three points short of a play-off place, having lost their previous manager Dean Keates to Walsall in March.
Ricketts joined the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy on a part-time basis in August before being permanently appointed as the lead coach of the under-16s in November.
The 36-year-old also made over fifty appearances for Wolves during a spell between 2013 and 2015 during which he also captained the club.
After being forced to call time on his playing career early through a serious knee injury in November 2016, he completed his UEFA A Licence with the FA of Wales, while having embarked on his Pro Licence qualification.
Ricketts brings a long and successful pedigree of football experience spanning sixteen years as a professional during which time he has won promotion three times with three different clubs, while also captaining Wolves in both League One and the Championship.
He played over 550 matches in every league from the National League to the Premier League and also fifty-two appearances for the Wales national side.
After being forced to call time on his playing career early through a serious knee injury in November 2016, he has successfully plied his coaching skills at both Coventry City and Wolves since hanging up his boots eighteen months ago.
Wrexham Director Spencer Harris told the club`s official website: “We are delighted to welcome Sam to Wrexham as the Club’s new permanent manager.
“As expected, there was huge interest in the position, but we believe we have chosen the outstanding candidate to take the Club forward, to match our own aspirations and those of our supporters.
“Sam is a man with an excellent pedigree in football and we believe he has the knowledge, drive and determination to bring success to the Club as we build for the future.
“We are sure Sam will receive the usual tremendous backing from our fantastic supporters and we now look forward with real enthusiasm to the new season”.
