Celtic Nation went top of the Ebac Northern League First Division with a comfortable 5-1 win over Billingham Synthonia….

….at Central Avenue on Tuesday night.

Defender Paul Johnson headed them in front from a corner after 9 minutes, then Micky Rae scored for the ninth successive game when he turned well and fired in from the edge of the area, and Johnson’s fellow central defender Matty Grieve flicked on a free-kick for the third.

Michael Sweet pulled a goal back when he latched on to a through ball and fired home, but on 75 minutes Johnson made it 4-1 from another free-kick.

Sub Johnny Allan fired another from 12 yards out to complete the victory.

West Auckland Town found second-bottom Hebburn a handful for the second time in four days before they won 2-0.

Both teams hit the woodwork in the first half, Neil Pattison for West and Calvin McMahon for Hebburn, and West finally took the lead on the hour-mark when Dennis Knight crossed for Paul Garthwaite to score from 20 yards.

Stuart Banks made sure on 77 minutes when he pounced on a poor clearance by Hebburn keeper Gary Rogers, and scored with his first touch of the ball.

Durham City comfortably beat Marske United 4-1 at New Ferens Park.

City took the lead after 23 minutes through Scott Fenwick, and then they got their second when a headed clearance by Robbie Deane went straight to Denver Morris who scored from 25 yards.

Morris fired left footed into the top corner and Craig Ellison scored the fourth from a free-kick.

Marske improved in the second half and John Alexander set up Josh MacDonald to fire into the roof of the net on 49 minutes.
