Denly Targets Midfielder

Sam Denly is targeting a midfielder in an effort to help Herne Bay end their poor run in the Ryman League Division One South.

The Bay boss is working on bringing in a new player but doesn’t think anything will happen ahead of this weekend’s trip to Walton & Hersham.

The Winch’s Field club’s season has stalled, following five successive defeats and Denly admitted: “My job is to keep things fresh and I think we would benefit from experience in the ranks, especially in the middle of the park.

“I am talking to a couple of players and hope something might be done next week. The boys are short on confidence after a poor run and it’s my responsibility to build it back into them.

“The one thing we can’t do is start feeling sorry for ourselves, otherwise 10 games will come and go and we will be in the bottom five.”

Denly arrived in the job predicting a first season of consolidation for Bay and admits
sixteenth place, five points above the relegation zone is below those expectations.

He said: “I still want to finish at least around eighth or tenth – certainly mid-table. I still believe that is within our reach. The good thing is we have still got twenty-odd games left to put things right.”

Walton are on an even worse run than Bay, having taken only one point from their last twenty-four.
