Blue Square Bet North club FC Halifax Town have signed midfielder Simon Hackney.

Manchester-born Hackney began his professional career at Carlisle United after being spotted playing for Woodley Sports.

He played 117 times for the Cumbrians, scoring seventeen goals, before being transferred to Colchester United for a fee of around £120,000 in January 2009.

He made thirty-five appearances for the U`s and had loan spells with Morecambe and Oxford United before returning north with Rochdale in the summer of 2011.

But an abdominal injury limited him to a total of just two games in the league campaign for the Spotland outfit.

The 28-year-old went on trial with Conference Premier side Wrexham in July after rejecting the deal he was offered by Rochdale.
