Livermore Has to Cut His Cloth

David Livermore is facing up to the challenges of rebuilding his Histon squad on a shoe-string budget following relegation…

….from the Blue Square Bet Premier.

The Stutes boss has explained the club had to release Erkan Okay as they could not afford to continue paying his wages, and other similarly tough decisions will have to be made in the next few days.

Lanre Oyebanjo and Lee Smith have been offered new deals but are still considering their options before making a final decision.

“Erkan was the joint-highest paid player at the club and we just couldn’t afford him any more,” said Livermore.

“From my point of view, Erkan was fantastic for me last season. It was great to have him around the place and it’s with a heavy heart that we’ve decided to let him go.

“But I’ve got to do what’s right for the club. With the budget we’re going to have for next season, we’re going to have to use our money wisely. I’m going to need a bigger squad next season so we’ve got more options.”

Okay was one of four players earning the same money, but Livermore could not retain all of them.

“If we’d kept all four, they would have taken up half of the whole playing budget,” he said. “We can get eight to ten players for that sort of money, and that’s the difficult task I now face.”

Livermore continued: “Lanre has been offered another contract, and he was one of the lads on good money. It’s now up to him to think it over.

“There are some difficult decisions to be made and some of them have to be made on financial grounds. Whatever I decide, it’s going to be tough. No one let me down last season and everyone played their part.”

Goalkeeper David Knight is contracted to Histon for next season, but Livermore said he was keen to try to find a new club for the 24-year-old, with financial concerns again playing a part in that decision.

“His agent has been in touch asking for a free transfer,” said Livermore.

“David has been on double what some of the other players are on, so for financial reasons we can’t afford to keep him. We’ll try to find a new club for him.”
