No Pilgrims Return for Clare

Following the news that Boston United had added the vast experience of Craig Armstrong to their playing squad, the Blue….

….Square Bet North club ruled out a swoop for former favourite Daryl Clare.

Utility man Armstrong became the fourth new arrival at York Street in the last week after quitting as Eastwood Town manager.

Joint-managers Jason Lee and Lee Canoville wasted no time in swooping for the 36-year-old, who has played for Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday in his long career.

“He’s someone myself and Jason know very well,” said Canoville. “We’ve been talking to him for a while and knew he wasn’t very happy at Eastwood with the way things were being run there.

“When he became available we were interested immediately.

“He can play in a lot of different positions so he’ll give us options. He can play in midfield as a holding player, as a centre back and at left-back. He trained with us last week and you can see he’s still got a lot of quality. All the lads were very impressed.”

However, Armstrong will not be joined at York Street by Clare, who was linked with a return to the club.

The 33-year-old left Cambridge United last week after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent and cannot play for another Conference Premier club until January.

The availability of the Louth-based player is sure to alert Conference North clubs, but not Boston.

“We’re not looking to sign Daryl,” confirmed Canoville.

“We’re very happy with the squad we’ve got and we’ve got a few options up front at the moment.”
