Play-Off Hero Returns to Alty

The player responsible for most Altrincham supporters’ favourite memory of recent times is back at The J.Davidson Stadium after midfielder Greg Wilkinson re-joined the Vanarama National League North club.

More than 4,000 fans were packed into Alty’s ground nearly two-and-a-half years ago for a promotion play-off final with Guiseley AFC that was on a knife-edge when substitute Wilkinson appeared on the touchline just seconds from the end of extra-time.

A set-piece specialist, he was sent on in anticipation of an apparently-inevitable penalty shoot-out that would have stretched already-frayed nerves to breaking point.

Instead, loitering just outside the area for a possible knockdown as Kyle Perry challenged the Guiseley keeper, he slotted home the most dramatic of goals for a 2-1 win with his first touch of the ball, booking Alty’s place in non-League football’s top flight and sending the home crowd into raptures.

Subsequently released, the 26-year-old was at AFC Telford United last season but was not kept on after picking up an injury towards the end of the campaign.

He is now fully fit and will be available for tomorrow’s Emirates FA Cup tie with Gainsborough Trinity at The J.Davidson Stadium after training with Alty last night and increasing manager Jim Harvey’s midfield options by re-signing.

In a further move to bolster numbers, particularly with seven substitutes permitted in the FA Cup, four players from the reserve squad have been registered for first-team duty.

They are midfielders Rhain Davis and Laurence Taylor and defenders William Foster and Marcus Dibble.
