Reds Gain First Last Day Win Since 2007

Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law felt his side fully deserved their last day of the season win at North Ferriby United, who finished as runners-up in the Vanarama National League North.

The victory extended the Reds’ unbeaten away run in 2016 to thirteen games without defeat in all competitions but bizarrely, it was the first time Law’s side had won away for him on the last day during his nine-season reign.

It was the first time Alfreton had won away on the final day of the season since April 28th 2007 when a Mark Rawle goal gained a 1-0 win at Kettering Town in Marcus Ebdon’s last game in charge.

“l thought we were the better side. We knew what we were coming into, we knew it was going to be a physical game. They’ve shown why they are where they are in the league and we’ve probably shown how we could have been in that position,” reflected Law.

“Too often though we’ve fallen down on the basics, whereas a side like North Ferriby you know what they’re going to do and they keep on doing it. We, too many times this year, haven’t done that.

“As l’ve just said to the players they’ve shown you what it takes to be a team at the top, and that’s what we’ve got to come back next year and do.”

Law also had praise for goalscorer Sam Smith. He said: “l`m pleased for Sam. He’s been absolutely smashed from pillar to post, he’s had little or no protection from the referee, he’s split his eye open, he’s kept going back for more and he’s given as good as he’s got and l thought that was a really good performance.

“l’m really pleased he’s got his goal and he’s deserved it.

“Last Tuesday we won on penalties – it was a difficult game. Belper Town snapped into everything and played like they haven’t all year, but we got the win – then we’ve gone to North Ferriby and l said before the game we wanted to finish positively.

“Ferriby were going into the play-offs and l wanted to make sure we went out there and gave them what they didn’t want – it was that sort of game – we matched them physically and l thought we were the better side”.
