Silkmen Go Third

Macclesfield Town moved into third place in the Vanarama National League after a comfortable 3-0 win against Wrexham at the Moss Rose in the only game on Tuesday night.

The Silkmen started brightly and went close to opening the scoring in the first 10 minutes after Danny Whitaker got on the end of a Neill Byrne’s cross but his effort was gathered by Wrexham keeper Shwan Jalal.

Jalal then saved from Danny Rowe`s 20-yarder 5 minutes later and then from Chris Holroyd seconds later.

The breakthrough came 10 minutes before the break when the lively Whitaker fired past Jalal from just outside the area.

Just 2 minutes after the interval, Macc made it 2-0 when Whitaker’s cross was headed home by Paul Lewis.

Six minutes later and it was game over when some poor defending allowed Whitaker in to net his second of the game.

Rowe twice forced Jalal into decent saves midway through the half, while the visitors ensured that Scott Flinders had a very comfortable debut in the Silkmen goal.

The defeat will heap yet more pressure on Wrexham boss Gary Mills, who was booed off after the cross-border derby draw with Chester FC last weekend.
