Trawlerboys Suffer Home Hammering By Moatsiders

Merstham made themselves all-but safe from relegation from the Ryman League Premier Division as they inflicted a 5-1 hammering of Lowestoft Town on their own Crown Meadow patch on Thursday night.

Both teams were embarking on three games in five days, but the Trawlerboys, who were expected to feature amongst the top end of the table following relegation from the Vanarama National League North, already looked tired after a dreadful first half for them.

The Moatsiders went in front after 16 minutes when Marc Okoye followed up to net after home keeper Jake Jessup had clawed away a corner away.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 when some poor defending allowed Omar Folkes to score.

The Trawlerboys were back in the contest 3 minutes later though when Jak Reed got on the end of a Shaun Bammant head-on to slam past Yannick Makeise from an angle.

Ten minutes later it was 3-1 though as the home defence stood off and allowed Dan Bennett to beat Jessup.

And a poor first half for the home fans in the 404 crowd saw the visitors make it 4-1 right on the whistle when Alex Addai burst away with electric pace past defender Harry Barker and into the box to score.

The second half was a much quieter affair, although the Moatsiders did eventually make it a nap hand 2 minutes from time through Michael Abnett.

After a season in which Merstham reached the First Round of the Emirates F A Cup and featured on BBC, it would have been extremely disappointing if it had ended in relegation, but this win virtually assures another season in the Premier Division for Hayden Bird`s side.
